In the recent federal budget, the Tories* surprised the scientific community by not including Genome Canada, a major player in funding large-scale genome science projects in Canada. From the Ottawa Citizen article:
Stunned officials with Genome Canada say their exclusion from the budget for the first time in nine years will force the country to pull out of some international research projects and put jobs in promising medical research at risk.
Nor was there any new money in the budget for research operating grants at federal funding agencies, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Social Science and Humanities Research Council and the National Science and Engineering Research Council.
I’ve already lamented the loss of the national science adviser and provided my thoughts on the various political parties and their attitudes towards science. This lack of funding increases for federal granting agencies is just another indicator that the Tories* don’t understand the value of research.
