Happy Milestone Birthday, Mom!
Today is my mom’s birthday and it’s a milestone one! I’m not going to say which one, but I really hope you have a great day, Mom, and remember, you are only as old as you feel! Age is just a number! The only thing worse than turning [redacted age] is not turning [redacted age].
My mom is the greatest mom. She and my dad raised me and my sister to be independent, hard-working, to find something that we wanted to do with our lives and then to go do it. She taught me so many things that are core to who I am and what I do. Some of it is big stuff – like the value of learning (“Education is never wasted!” she often said), a lesson that some say I took to heart a little too much! Some of it is smaller day to day things, like how to bake and managing my finances. Those were things that I just took for granted for a very long time – until I learned that many people don’t have these types of skills!
I’ve also learned how lucky I am to have a such a great mom when I hear from other people how fraught their relationships are with their moms. On more than one occasion I’ve been in a group of people where someone talks about how their mom said or did something to undermine their confidence/made unreasonable criticisms or them/some other thing that seemed terrible and they said “Ugh, mothers are all like this, right?” and then everyone else in the group was like “Totally” and I’m sitting their thinking “What are you talking about? My mom is the best!”
I haven’t seen my mom in nearly two years (thanks to this stupid pandemic), but at least I can talk and text with her on the regular, and probably do so more since the pandemic started than I did before. And my family is all doubled vaccinated – with the exception of my under-12 nephew who isn’t yet eligible but will be soon – and traveling is starting to be a thing we can do again, so hopefully it won’t be too much longer before I can sit and enjoy a glass of wine with my mom in person, instead of over Zoom!
Happy birthday, Mom! I love you!
