50 Things Before 50
It has been a ridiculously long time since I wrote anything here! I didn’t even end up doing a goals list for 2025, which is the main thing I’ve blogged about in recent years. I still read lots of books and cooked lots of new things last year – just didn’t blog about them.
Anyhoo, I thought I’d come back with a 50 before 50 list. I recently reached my late mid-40s and decided that I’d make a list of some things I want to do before I reach the half-century mark next year! I’ve set up a whole spreadsheet (because of course I have) with target dates and categories and such, but I won’t bore you with that. Here’s the list and I’ll try to report back on these things over the next year!
- Personal best deadlift (current PB is 100 kg (220.5 lbs))
- Personal best squat (current PB is 97.5 kg (215 lbs))
- Personal best bench press (current PB is 47.5 kg (202 lbs))
- Personal best # of chin-ups or pull-ups (current PB is (I think) 4)
- Try reformer pilates
- Finish my first Amagurmi (crocheted stuff animal)
- Finish the top I started crocheting
- Finish the poncho I started crocheting
- Crochet something using Tunisian crochet
- Crochet a full-sized blanket
- Learn to quilt
- Learn to embroider
- Make the embroidered pigeon that Nancy gave me for Christmas
- Try 50 new recipes (can be things I’ve made before, but has to be a new recipe
- Make cheddar cheese
- Make ricotta cheese
- Perform a total 100 times (including open mics) – as of my 49th birthday I was already at 57 times
- Make a database for my jokes
- Take a French class
- Look into my family tree
- Document all my accounts for my executrix
- Get a power of attorney
- Get a hearing test
- Book my shingles vaccine (can’t get it until I’m 50)
- Renew my passport
- Write a short story
- Write the two children’s books I’ve started
- Make an outline of a cookbook that I’m working on with my sister
- Talk to my publisher about the possibility of an evaluation textbook
- Finish the MHCRI papers I’m working on
- Refresh the kitchen
- Install a heat pump
- Clean bathroom fan (and determine if I need a new one)
- Fix the broken shelf in my office
- Reorganize my home office
- Audit my wardrobe (donate anything I don’t need anymore or that doesn’t fit)
- Audit my makeup (throw out anything that is too old)
- Audit my jewelry (fix any broken pieces, make sure all earrings have a partner and a back!)
- Paint my laundry sign
- Reorganize my Google Drive
- Get professional makeup lessons
- Go swimming at təməsew̓txʷ
- Be able to hold crow pose for 20 seconds
- Make a list of all the gift cards I have
- Spend all the gift cards on that list
- Go on an overseas trip
- Do goat yoga
- Do alpaca yoga
- Buy myself a piece of “milestone jewelry” for my 50th birthday
- Plan an epic 50th birthday celebration
