50 Things Before 50

It has been a ridiculously long time since I wrote anything here! I didn’t even end up doing a goals list for 2025, which is the main thing I’ve blogged about in recent years. I still read lots of books and cooked lots of new things last year – just didn’t blog about them.

Anyhoo, I thought I’d come back with a 50 before 50 list. I recently reached my late mid-40s and decided that I’d make a list of some things I want to do before I reach the half-century mark next year! I’ve set up a whole spreadsheet (because of course I have) with target dates and categories and such, but I won’t bore you with that. Here’s the list and I’ll try to report back on these things over the next year!

  1. Personal best deadlift (current PB is 100 kg (220.5 lbs))
  2. Personal best squat (current PB is 97.5 kg (215 lbs))
  3. Personal best bench press (current PB is 47.5 kg (202 lbs))
  4. Personal best # of chin-ups or pull-ups (current PB is (I think) 4)
  5. Try reformer pilates
  6. Finish my first Amagurmi (crocheted stuff animal)
  7. Finish the top I started crocheting
  8. Finish the poncho I started crocheting
  9. Crochet something using Tunisian crochet
  10. Crochet a full-sized blanket
  11. Learn to quilt
  12. Learn to embroider
  13. Make the embroidered pigeon that Nancy gave me for Christmas
  14. Try 50 new recipes (can be things I’ve made before, but has to be a new recipe
  15. Make cheddar cheese
  16. Make ricotta cheese
  17. Perform a total 100 times (including open mics) – as of my 49th birthday I was already at 57 times
  18. Make a database for my jokes
  19. Take a French class
  20. Look into my family tree
  21. Document all my accounts for my executrix
  22. Get a power of attorney
  23. Get a hearing test
  24. Book my shingles vaccine (can’t get it until I’m 50)
  25. Renew my passport
  26. Write a short story
  27. Write the two children’s books I’ve started
  28. Make an outline of a cookbook that I’m working on with my sister
  29. Talk to my publisher about the possibility of an evaluation textbook
  30. Finish the MHCRI papers I’m working on
  31. Refresh the kitchen
  32. Install a heat pump
  33. Clean bathroom fan (and determine if I need a new one)
  34. Fix the broken shelf in my office
  35. Reorganize my home office
  36. Audit my wardrobe (donate anything I don’t need anymore or that doesn’t fit)
  37. Audit my makeup (throw out anything that is too old)
  38. Audit my jewelry (fix any broken pieces, make sure all earrings have a partner and a back!)
  39. Paint my laundry sign
  40. Reorganize my Google Drive
  41. Get professional makeup lessons
  42. Go swimming at təməsew̓txʷ
  43. Be able to hold crow pose for 20 seconds
  44. Make a list of all the gift cards I have
  45. Spend all the gift cards on that list
  46. Go on an overseas trip
  47. Do goat yoga
  48. Do alpaca yoga
  49. Buy myself a piece of “milestone jewelry” for my 50th birthday
  50. Plan an epic 50th birthday celebration
