NaBloPoMo – Day 20 – Phoning It In

So I have to get up at way-too-early-o’clock tomorrow. I’m working over at Lion’s Gate Hospital a lot these days and while I usually take transit, I have to teach out at UBC tomorrow evening, so I have to drive to LGH so that I can get to UBC after work ((Because there is no way in hell I’m transiting from North Van to UBC or from UBC to home!). Traffic going to North Vancouver is horrifically bad. Like, if I leave by 6 am, I can get there in about 30 minutes. If I leave at 6:10 am, it will take me a hour. If I leave after that – I don’t even want to know. So basically I have to get up at like 4:45 am tomorrow. UGH.

This means that it’s way past my bedtime! G’night everyone!

NaBloPoMo – Day 19 – O Christmas Tree

Scott and I put up the Christmas tree tonight! The cats helped, where by “helped” I mean jumped in the box as we opened it and tried to climb in the tree. Crick put her favourite toy under the tree, which can only mean she thinks it’s a gift.

Christmas tree 2017In unrelated news, I scored the game winning goal in my hockey game today. It’s a Christmas-tree-putting-up-day miracle!

NaBloPoMo – Day 18 – Cat Toy Basket

So this is something that I did eleventy billion years ago and never got around to blogging about: I made a fabric basket for the cats’ toys! You may remember that back in the summer, Cath, Steph, and I took a sewing class and learned how to make tote bags. Well, we enjoyed it so much that we went back again the next month and took a class on how to make a fabric basket. I had decided that I wanted to use mine as a toy basket for the kitties’ toys – my cleaning lady always puts all the cat toys into one of the many cardboard boxes I have around the condo (because my condo is heaven for kitties and they love them some cardboard boxes), but I thought it would be nice to have the toys in something nicer than that. So when we got to the class, I originally picked out these fabrics:

But then it turned out that the one with the kitties on it wasn’t the right kind of fabric for this project, so I chose a different kitty-based one:

I saw that another woman in the class chose the same pink fabric with cat faces on it and I asked her, “Oh, are you making a basket for your cat’s toys too?” and she replied “I am now!”

Anyway, here’s my cat toy basket in all it’s finished glory:

Haven’t done any other sewing classes since then – I got busy with teaching this semester and Cath was busy with selling her house, buying a new house, and moving. But I really did enjoy it, so perhaps I’ll have a look at what classes are being offered once the course I’m teaching is over. I still really want to do the class to learn how to make zippered pouches.

NaBloPoMo – Day 17 – Cat Photos!

Went to the gym after work today for the first time in more than two weeks – I’d put my membership on hold for two weeks as I was away for a week in Squamish doing data collection and then away for a week in Washington for a conference – and then I’ve spent most of my evening uploading photos to Flickr because I hadn’t uploaded photos for ages and I have ever so many. Anyway, now it’s nearly 11 pm and I’m still not done uploading photos and my brain is too tired from a hectic week of work to think of anything good to blog about, so instead I give you these pictures of my adorable cats!

NaBloPoMo – Day 16 – Painting

I think I want to paint my condo. Back when I bought it, I didn’t have much turnaround time between when I got possession of the place and when I had to be out the place I was renting due to some travel that I’d booked before I knew I was going to buy the place, so I didn’t have time to paint when I bought it. And I was mostly OK with the colours of the place anyway. I mean, I didn’t love the brown wall in the bedroom, but I didn’t hate it. But it’s been more than three years and I feel like it could do with some freshening up. I’ve never painted before, so I guess I’m going to have to watch some YouTube videos – which, from everyone I know who does any sort of home improvement project, is how one learns how to do such things. So if anyone has any recommended YouTube videos and/or other resources about painting rooms that they think are particularly useful, please pass them along! Or colour recommendations – I have zero knowledge of interior design or what’s trendy vs. outdated. My decorating strategy up to this point in my life can best be described as haphazard – I like
this painting; I need a new dresser because this one is falling apart; oooh, I love this purple chair! So any and all advice is appreciated!

NaBloPoMo – Day 15 –

Wrote this earlier today, but just getting around to posting it now!

Taking the Skytrain to work today for the first time in a while and totally forgot to bring my kobo! So writing a blog posting on my phone is how I’ll keep myself entertained, I guess. I’m feeling much better today than I did yesterday – when I got home from class I had a bite to eat, since I’d barely eaten all day as I hadn’t felt up to it – Scott kindly made me some food while I rested – and then I pretty much went straight to bed. Got a solid night’s sleep (and when I think about it, it’s probably the first time in at least two weeks that I’ve slept more than about 5.5 hrs in a row, which may have contributed to my getting sick!) and woke out without the headache and fever1. I think I really should get better organized so that I can get a proper night’s sleep more days than I don’t!

  1. Though in fairness, I took my temperature before bed and I wasn’t fevered then, so I was probably already on them road to recovery []

NaBloPoMo – Day 14 – Sick

So I’m totes sick today. It started with a sore throat and a headache yesterday, and today I’m feverish/chilled/headachey/fuzzy headed. I worked from home today – I couldn’t take a sick day because there was stuff that happened while I was away that I had to deal with – but I was able to do it via teleconference so that I didn’t go into work to contaminate other people. Unfortunately, I had to teach tonight and I have no idea even how one calls in sick when they are a course instructor and nor could I just teleconference into the class, so I just warned my students that I was sick and they should probably keep their distance. Hopefully I’ll get a good night’s sleep and feel better tomorrow.

NaBloPoMo – Day 13 – 43 days until Christmas

I can’t believe it’s only 43 days until Christmas! When I was leaving my sister’s place this morning to head to the airport, we were all like “See you in a month!” I know I (and everyone else) says this pretty much every year, but this year has *really* flown by! I feel like I just got back from last year’s Christmas holidays! And when I think back on the last ten and half months, I don’t feel like I’ve done that much. I mean, I worked a tonne and taught a course in all three semesters, but I didn’t go on any epic trips1 and I didn’t do any epic fun projects. I also reached the end of the 1001 day for my 101 things to do in 1001 days list, but didn’t create a new list! Perhaps creating my next list will help inspire me to do something epic next year! That’s going on my ‘to do’ list… for after the end of the semester!

  1. Granted, Washington, DC was pretty fun, but it was mostly conferencing and not nearly as much exploring of the city as I would have liked. []

NaBloPoMo – Day 11 – Surprise!

Tomorrow is my mother’s birthday, so I thought it would be fun to show up unannounced for a surprise birthday visit! The conference I was at in Washington, DC ended today and, unbeknownst to my mom, I had to fly through Toronto to go back to Vancouver. So I decided that instead of having a 2 hour stopover in T.O., I would pay a few extra bucks to have a 1 day stopover so that I could spend my mom’s birthday with her! I recruited my sister to this subterfuge and had her invite my mother over tonight so that I could just take show up at my sister’s place – and she was so surprised!

The funny thing is, my sister and I came up with this awhile ago, back when I booked my flight to Washington. And wouldn’t you know it, but last month my mom tells me that she decided to go to Montreal to surprise her sister, my Aunt Maureen, for her birthday! Apparently the apple does not fall too far from the tree!

NaBloPoMo Day 10 – Hallelujah

Still at the conference, still awesome but totally exhausting, and now dealing with eleventy billion work emails that I wasn’t able to deal with while conferencing. So instead of a blog posting, I’m giving you this video to watch, because we did a sing-a-long of this with modified lyrics and it’s been stuck in my head all day:
